At Koota, we have chosen to offer fair-trade coffees that are Fairtrade/Max Havelaar certified, in addition to being organically grown. Concretely, this model notably provides for a guaranteed minimum price and a development premium intended for producer organizations.
What is fair-trade coffee?
Fair trade seeks to establish a more balanced commercial relationship between producers, cooperatives, businesses, and consumers.
In the Fairtrade/Max Havelaar system, the label notably regulates purchasing conditions, producer remuneration, working conditions, and various social and environmental criteria.
This approach is directly in line with Koota's social responsibility and our desire to better understand the conditions under which our coffees are produced.
What does the Fairtrade/Max Havelaar label guarantee?
For producers, fair trade is not just a statement of intent. It is based on precise standards.

- A development premium paid to producer organizations to finance collective projects.
- Social requirements concerning notably working conditions, forced labor, and the fight against child labor.

Why did Koota choose fair trade?
From Koota's creation, we chose to integrate fair trade into how we select our coffees.
Our collaboration with Fairtrade/Max Havelaar allows us to offer coffees that meet fair trade standards and to support a model that takes producers and their organizations more into account.
This choice complements our commitment to organic farming. The social and environmental dimensions are different, but they both contribute to a more responsible approach to coffee production.

How does fair trade change things for producers?
Producers involved in fair trade can be grouped into cooperatives. This organization allows them to structure themselves collectively and to participate in decisions concerning the use of the development premium.
These collective funds can be used to improve infrastructure, support education, develop access to healthcare, or support environmental projects.
The objective is therefore twofold: to better regulate the commercial relationship with producers and to give them more means to invest collectively in their communities.
What is the link with the environment?
The Fairtrade/Max Havelaar label also includes environmental standards. These concern notably the preservation of natural resources, water, ecosystems, biodiversity, and the use of dangerous chemical products.
At Koota, this dimension complements the choice of coffees also labeled Organic Agriculture.
Fair trade and organic agriculture do not, therefore, designate exactly the same thing: the former notably regulates the commercial relationship and social conditions, while the latter concerns the method of agricultural production.
How to know where your Koota coffee comes from?
Commitments do not stop at the label. Koota also allows you to trace the origin and journey of your coffee thanks to the information associated with each batch.
The traceability system notably allows you to find information on the producing country, the characteristics of the bean, certifications, harvesting, transport, roasting, and packaging.
